PSA Sunday: Think Before You Speak

Sponsor Organization: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network
Campaign Website: ThinkB4YouSpeak.com
Volunteer Agency: ArnoldNYC

Almost 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. LGBT teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe. Homophobic remarks such as “that’s so gay” are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens’ vernacular. Most do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of anti-LGBT bias and behavior in America’s schools. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce and prevent the use of homophobic language in an effort to create a more positive environment for LGBT teens. The campaign also aims to reach adults, including school personnel and parents; their support of this message is crucial to the success of efforts to change behavior.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.
PSA Sunday: Protecting Our Economy

Your ability to shop where and when you want may depend on Congress passing a tax reform bill. To protect neighborhood merchants, legislators are considering the Main Street Fairness Act. Not a new tax, it's an increased effort to enforce an old one. Right now, all purchases made online, like those in local stores, are subject to sales tax, but it's often not collected. Learn more from the International Council of Shopping Centers at ICSC.ORG/MainStreetFairness.

This message brought to you by the ICSC, North American Precis Syndicate, and the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Lifelong Literacy

This campaign was created with the Library of Congress in an effort to inspire young readers to become lifelong readers. The objective is to inspire fun and promote literacy in all types of learning. From books to magazines to comics, and in all its other forms, reading gives kids the opportunity to explore their imaginations, and "Explore New Worlds."

PSAs encourage viewers to visit read.gov, where the serialized The Exquisite Corpse Adventure is currently featured. The term "exquisite corpse" is not just some macabre part of the title, but a reference to the story's form. This wild mystery adventure is the product of multiple well-known children's authors; one writing one part of the story, before handing off to the next. New episodes are published online every two weeks.

The campaign has also partnered with Universal Partnerships & Licensing and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company to develop PSAs featuring the iconic characters from the Curious George series. These ads encourage parents to read with their children and inspire them to become curious readers for a lifetime.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Alcoholism

Betty Ford, the former first lady whose triumph over drug and alcohol addiction became a beacon of hope for addicts and the inspiration for her Betty Ford Center, died on Friday. She was 93.

The Betty Ford Center (BFC), previously the Betty Ford Clinic, is a not-for-profit, separately licensed residential chemical dependency recovery hospital in Rancho Mirage, California, which offers inpatient, outpatient, and day treatment for alcohol and other drug addictions as well as prevention and education programs for family and children. The Center was co-founded by former U.S. First Lady Betty Ford and Leonard Firestone in October, 1982. Mrs. Ford's decision to undertake such a project followed on the heels of her own battle with alcohol dependence and opioid analgesic addiction, and after her release from the Long Beach Naval Hospital, she pursued the goal of creating a treatment center that emphasized the needs of women.

If drinking or other substances interfere with daily living including your relationships and work performance, seek advice from professionals. There are many reputable organizations, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, that help with these problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides links to some potentially useful resources HERE.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Re-connecting Kids With Nature

Sponsor Organization: US Forest Service
Campaign Website: DiscoverTheForest.org

The time U.S. children spend outdoors has declined 50% in the past 20 years. Barriers like population shifts to urban/sub-urban environments, an increase in children’s indoor activities, and a lack of awareness of or access to nearby nature locations have driven this trend.

However, research shows there are many benefits to kids spending time in nature. This time spent outdoors gives children the ability to explore, use their imaginations, discover new wildlife and engage in unstructured and adventurous play.

This campaign seeks to raise awareness of these benefits, inspiring young people to discover the joy of exploring the natural world and encouraging them to experience nature first-hand. As campaign ads depict, nature is also a place of self-discovery. A place for young people to realize and express a variety of personality traits from curious to creative to adventurous.

Children are encouraged to ask their parents to bring them to nature locations and allow them to explore. The website www.DiscoverTheForest.org helps facilitate this by providing a zip code search of forests and parks, powered by Nature Find™ and Google Maps, as well as downloadable activities to take with them.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Hands-Only CPR

Sponsor Organization: American Heart Association
Campaign Website: handsonlycpr.org

Each year in the U.S., EMS treats nearly 300,000 people who suffer cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public locations. In the absence of immediate, effective CPR, the chance of survival decreases 7 to 10 percent per minute.

An individual's survival depends greatly on receiving CPR from someone nearby. However, less than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get this help. Most bystanders are worried they might do something wrong or make the situation worse.

This campaign introduces Hands-Only™ CPR -- a two-step technique that involves calling 9-1-1 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. Bystanders are urged to act immediately, using this new technique, when an adult collapses.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Let's Move!

Solving the Problem of Childhood Obesity within a Generation

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation so that kids born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

As part of this effort, President Barack Obama established the first-ever Task Force on Childhood Obesity to develop and implement an inter-agency plan that details a coordinated strategy, identifies key benchmarks, and outlines an action plan to end the problem of childhood obesity within a generation. The goal of the action plan is to reduce the childhood obesity rate to just five percent by 2030 – the same rate before childhood obesity first began to rise in the late 1970s. In total, the report presents a series of 70 specific recommendations, many of which can be implemented right away.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.

PSA Sunday: Supporting Minority Education

The United Negro College Fund has had a profoundly positive impact on the lives of millions of minority students. The organization has helped more than 350,000 minority students graduate from college. However, despite their gains, a persistent gap in education remains between African Americans and other students and between low-income students and their more affluent peers. According to UNCF, the high cost of college and the lack of financial assistance are the major reasons that students don't enter or complete college.

By highlighting the leadership and accomplishments of important African Americans and their inventions and innovations, the new PSA campaign asks potential donors to consider the impact of minority education on their own lives and, “Support minority education today, so we don’t miss out on the next big idea tomorrow.”

Together, we hope to impact tomorrow’s world by opening up educational opportunities for minority youth today, because a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.
Or that you are entitled to one free credit report per year under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act?

A survey conducted by Opinion Research USA and the Ad Council shows that Americans are misinformed about their credit health, with over 70% wrongly identifying a credit score of 600 as average or above average.

Targeting low to moderate-income Americans of all ages and ethnicities with some form of credit, this campaign was developed to inform consumers about their credit and the importance of actively taking responsibility for maintaining its health. Additionally, this campaign aims to educate consumers about important steps they can take to establish and maintain good credit, including: paying bills on time, keeping credit card balances as low as possible and resisting the urge to open up more credit cards than are needed within a short period of time.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.
75 Years of Pop Music Charts

Profile America — Tuesday, January 4th.

You might think that the idea of listing top-rated songs started with Casey Kasem. But the idea of the pop music chart originated 75 years ago on this date, when Billboard Magazine published such a list for the week ending December 30, 1935. That first chart included 78 rpm records by Ozzie Nelson and his orchestra and Tommy Dorsey, whose version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" was a best seller. Today's charts feature names such as Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. The way people buy and listen to music is changing, too. Now, music fans buy over a billion dollars worth of digital downloads a year, just over twice as much as they spend on CDs. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.

Sources: Kane's Famous First Facts, 7585
Statistical Abstract of the United States 2010, t. 1103
http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2010edition.html

Visit the Dance Radio Network (Ch. 1) weekly chart HERE.

PSA Sunday: Foreclosure Prevention

Campaign Sponsor: NeighborWorks® America
Campaign Website: ForeclosureHelpandHope.org
Volunteer Agency: Cossette NY

An estimated 4 million homes are at imminent risk of foreclosure this year. The problem is no longer confined to certain populations or neighborhoods, but will affect all of us – either directly or indirectly – regardless of community, ethnicity, and income level.

In the past, many homeowners in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure would avoid the problem so as not have to deal with the embarrassment or stigma associated with it. However, with the economic downturn, embarrassment is no longer the biggest barrier that homeowners face – rather, it is clear direction on what they should do. The marketplace is cluttered with conflicting messages about what to do and where to go for help, causing homeowners to become frustrated, confused and vulnerable.

In response, this campaign is designed to ensure that those facing foreclosure are getting proper guidance from the “right people.” The PSAs encourage homeowners to call 888-995-HOPE, a trusted hotline operated by the Homeownership Preservation Foundation, to receive free, reliable advice from HUD-approved housing counselors.

Brought to you in part by the Ad Council and your friends at the Dance Radio Network.
