Bright Idea

Why hide your radio station?

Traditionally radio studios are concealed within a corporate office building or obscured at the transmitter site.  The best promotional idea would be to have your studios publicly visible.  Having your main studios in a mall or store front has many benefits.  Aside from the obvious high-profile recognition translating to a potential ratings boost, your station would better serve the community.

Listeners and fans could drop off their requests and comments, interact at your kiosk, pick up a bumper sticker and program schedule, or get their picture taken by the iconic station sign (be creative!).  This is your promotion department’s dream.  A station could also utilize a public area to sell merchandise and music pertaining to their format.  And don’t forget upselling this to your advertisers.  Radio should be a real place in your neighborhood.

Publicity

Name recognition and branding are critical elements for effective publicity.  Dance music stations have many likely venues to target their product.  Arrange incentives for local gyms, health centers, restaurants, clubs, and entertainment spots to play your dance station throughout their establishment.  If you are a dance HD Radio affiliate, have a demonstration HD Radio in a prominent area playing your station.  Beside the logo of your station, educate prospective listeners with a catch phrase such as “If you like what you hear, listen anytime on [band/dial location].”
