PSA Sunday: May is Foster Care Month

Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity to shine a light on the plight of hundreds of thousands of children and youth in the foster care system. The campaign raises awareness about the urgent needs of these young people and encourages citizens from every walk of life to get involved.

Through the dedication of advocates, child welfare professionals, elected officials and support groups around the country, the total number of children waiting for a safe and permanent family has decreased from more than a half million to 463,000 between 2003 and the end of 2008. These numbers tell us that, together, we can make a difference for children in foster care. 12,476 children previously featured on AdoptUsKids now live with
permanent families!

PSA Sunday: Clean Air Month

Energy Efficiency

Sponsor Organization: U.S. Department of Energy
Campaign Website: loseyourexcuse.gov

Energy use is on the rise around the world. By 2030, global energy demand is expected to increase 50 percent above 2005 levels, with electricity demand alone in the U.S projected to rise 29 percent over the same period. Increasing demand requires additional supplies to keep costs low, ensure reliability, and reduce America’s dependence on foreign energy sources. At the same time, this growing demand must be addressed in the context of global climate change. Consumers can make a significant difference on all these fronts by reducing demand through simple energy efficiency measures. For example, households that install energy-saving bulbs can cut energy used for lighting by more than 80 percent.

In a national survey of kids ages 8-12, 85 percent of respondents believed that they could lead their family to do what is needed to consume less energy in the home. The U.S. Department of Energy and the Ad Council have partnered together to launch a new kid-targeted campaign entitled “What’s Your Excuse?” highlighting the simplicity of making energy efficient changes in the home and asking kids to join millions of others to make a difference by using their energy wisely.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.
PSA Sunday: Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness (May is Hurricane Preparedness Month)

Sponsor Organization: Federal Emergency Management Agency
Campaign websites: ready.gov
Volunteer Agency: Cramer-Krasselt and Elevacion, Ltd.

91% of Americans believe it’s important to be prepared for emergencies. However, only 58% of households report having taken any steps at all to prepare. In order to encourage more Americans to prepare themselves, their families and their communities, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has sponsored public service advertisements (PSAs) that educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to all kinds of emergencies.

Launched in February 2003, the Ready Campaign asks individuals to do three key things to prepare for the unexpected: 1) get an emergency supply kit, 2) make a family emergency plan, and 3) be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

PSA Sunday: May Mental Health Month

National Mental Health Anti-Stigma

Sponsor Organization: US Department of Health & Human Services,Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
Campaign Website: whatadifference.org
Volunteer Agency: Grey Worldwide

Mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder are widespread. In 2005 there were an estimated 24.6 million adults age 18 or older who experienced serious psychological distress (SPD), which is highly correlated with serious mental illness.

Among 18-25 year olds, the prevalence of SPD is high (18.6 % for 18-25, vs. 11.3% for all adults 18+) yet this age group shows the lowest rate of help-seeking behaviors. Further, those with mental health conditions in this age group have a high potential to minimize future disability and pursue recovery if they receive the right support and services early on.

In an effort to provide these young adults with a better chance at recovery, this campaign seeks to reach adults ages 18-25 with a message of acceptance and understanding of mental illness. It hopes to encourage friends to offer their support to a friend who has been diagnosed with a mental illness.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.
Sponsor Organization: The Humane Society of the United States; Maddie's Fund
Campaign Website: www.theshelterpetproject.org
Volunteer Agency: Draftfcb, Chicago

Of the eight million pets that enter animal shelters and rescue groups every year, approximately three million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized due to a lack of adoption. While there has been steady progress on the issue, the continued euthanasia of our best friends and family members is a national tragedy.

Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. It not only saves an animal's life, but adopted pets also provide unconditional love, affection and attention. Research has even shown that owning a pet has many positive psychological and physical health benefits.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

PSA Sunday: April is STD Awareness Month

April 2010 is STD Awareness Month, an annual observance to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases’ (STDs) impact on Americans' health and the importance of individuals discussing sexual health with their health care providers and partners.

STDs are a major public health issue:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are approximately 19 million new cases of STDs each year in the United States, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.

STDs have an economic impact: direct medical costs associated with STDs in the United States are estimated at $16.4 billion annually.

Untreated STDs can lead to serious long-term health consequences, especially for adolescent girls and young women. CDC estimates that undiagnosed and untreated STDs cause at least 24,000 women in the United States each year to become infertile.

Vaccines offer protection against two common sexually transmitted infections: Hepatitis B and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). These vaccines can prevent important health problems, such as liver disease and cervical cancer.

To reduce the impact of STDs, it is important to increase knowledge about sexually transmitted infections and make STD testing a part of routine medical care. Because many STDs have no symptoms, those at risk need to get tested and find out if they are infected.

What You Can Do?

Talk with your doctor or health care provider about STDs and ask about recommended vaccinations and testing.

Get tested. Visit findSTDtest.org to find STD testing locations near you.

Talk openly and honestly with your partner about STDs.

FM Radio in History

Profile America -- Thursday, March 4th. FM radio as we know it began this week in 1941. That's when the first commercial FM station went on the air -- W47NV in Nashville. FM -- standing for frequency modulation -- was first proposed in a scientific paper written by Edwin Armstrong in 1922. By 1934, he demonstrated how FM was unaffected by static, unlike all the radio stations then on the air, which used AM or amplitude modulation. Critics said the idea was impractical. World War II interrupted the advance of FM broadcasting, which slowly began to gain popularity in the 1950s. Today, there are nearly 11,000 radio stations around the nation -- close to six-out- of-10 of them operating on the FM band. Profile America is in its 13th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sources: Kane's Famous First Facts, 6299
www.history.com
Statistical Abstract of the United States 2010, t. 1095
http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2010edition.html

The 9th annual Billboard Music & Money Symposium will be held on March 4, 2010 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York.

This one-day event brings together the best minds from the music, legal, financial and Wall Street communities for an in-depth examination of the financial realities with which the music industry is contending. Don't miss the premier event for the music industry decision-makers, entrepreneurs and companies interested in providing funding for entertainment ventures.

"Billboard's Music & Money Symposium highlighted the need for a greater intersection between the creative and business visionaries, particularly in this time of evolving business models, great experimentation and dramatic change. Extremely worthwhile and informative." - John L. Simson, Executive Director, SOUNDEXCHANGE

PSA Sunday: Hands-Only CPR

Sponsor Organization: American Heart Association
Campaign Website: www.handsonlycpr.org
Volunteer Agency: Gotham Inc.

Each year in the U.S., EMS treats nearly 300,000 people who suffer cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public locations. In the absence of immediate, effective CPR, the chance of survival decreases 7 to 10 percent per minute.

An individual's survival depends greatly on receiving CPR from someone nearby. However, less than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get this help. Most bystanders are worried they might do something wrong or make the situation worse.

This campaign introduces Hands-Only CPR -- a two-step technique that involves calling 9-1-1 and pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. Bystanders are urged to act immediately, using this new technique, when an adult collapses.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

PSA Sunday: Anti-Steroids

Sponsor Organization: United States Olympic Committee
Campaign Website: www.DontBeAnAsterisk.com
Volunteer Agency: TBWA/Chiat/Day

In 2007, the federal government seized 56 underground steroid labs in the U.S., resulting in the confiscation of 11.4 million doses. The use of performance-enhancing substances is of primary concern in American sport. No segment of sport – from professional to youth – is immune to this problem. With increasing media coverage on steroid use in sports, teen usage has become a matter of greater consequence.

Not only are steroids a potential health hazard, they raise many ethical implications.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

PSA Sunday: Hispanic Preventive Health

Sponsor Organization: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Campaign Website: www.AHRQ.gov/superheroes
Volunteer Agency: Casanova Pendrill

Hispanics are 38% less likely than non-Hispanics to have visited the doctor within the past year, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In addition, more than a quarter of Hispanic adults have never had their cholesterol checked, two-thirds of Hispanics over 50 have never had a colonoscopy, and nearly 54 percent of Hispanic women over 40 have not had a mammogram within the last year.

The fact that one-third of U.S. Hispanics are uninsured, along with linguistic and cultural barriers, plays a role in these disparities, as shown in AHRQ’s recent National Healthcare Disparities Report. Studies have found that Hispanics often lag behind the general population in access to preventive care even when they are insured.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

PSA Sunday: Obesity Prevention

Sponsor Organization: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Campaign Website: www.smallstep.gov
Volunteer Agency: McCann-Erickson New York

Nearly two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese due to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. Obesity rates have increased by more than 60% among adults over the last 10 years. As a result, the health of the nation is getting progressively worse with consequences including increased risk for heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

When it comes to losing weight and fighting these diseases, many don’t realize that seemingly difficult behaviors such as eating healthy and exercising regularly can be made easier and attainable through small changes to their everyday lives. There are hundreds of small steps that Americans can incorporate within their busy lifestyles to begin moving themselves and their families toward health.

More than 100 Small Steps can be found at the website, here's just a few of them:

    * Take the stairs instead of the escalator.
    * Try smaller sized items when snacking or eating out.
    * Get of the bus a stop early and walk.
    * Portion out your snack on a plate, not from the bag.
    * Park farther from your destination and walk.
    * Order your latte with fat-free milk.

Brought to you in part by your friends at the Dance Radio Network and the Ad Council.

FCC Approves HD Radio™ Broadcasting Power Increase

We’re proud to announce that the Federal Communications Commission has approved the power increase for HD Radio™ broadcasting! This is especially good news for dance music radio. The Dance Radio Network is marketing our syndication services not only to FM, but HD Radio stations across America.

The change permits stations to increase power by up to 6 decibels, which is a four-fold increase from where we are currently. Said in percentages, this allows for you to broadcast with up to 4% of the power of your existing analog signal (up from 1%), with the potential of up to 10% with further application to the FCC. This is great news for HD Radio and the radio industry in general.

A note from Ibiquity CEO, Bob Struble… “We are pleased with the FCC’s action today to allow FM HD Radio stations to increase their power. The FCC Order is another significant milestone in the rollout of HD Radio Technology. The Commission has worked closely with the radio broadcast industry on this item, and chose a prudent course for the power increase which met the needs and addressed the concerns of the key constituents. This is another fine example of successful collaboration between the government and the private sector, and it promises to further enhance the benefits of HD Radio Technology to all Americans.”

The HD Radio Broadcast Team at iBiquity Digital thanks you for your support. twitter.com/hdradio | facebook.com/hdradio
